Although it may look small on a map Shetland is surprisingly big and extends over a large area from Sumburgh in the south to the northernmost point on the British Isles. Although spread over a wide area of ocean the isles benefit from a network of very good roads and regular, affordable, ferries. Lerwick, the capital and main town is located on Mainland Shetland within one and a half hours drive of Bordanoost and can easily be visited on a day trip. Other outlying islands can be visited by ferries or by a light aircraft service. There are bus services but to fully explore the isles a car is recommended.
